Olden Era Marketplace — How Resource Trading Works

The Marketplace is the building that turns surplus into progress. In Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, almost every faction hits a week 1 or week 2 moment where one missing resource blocks the entire build route. The Marketplace exists to fix that exact bottleneck by letting you trade the resources you have for the resource you need.

The catch is the price. Trading is intentionally expensive, especially with only one Marketplace, so it rewards players who solve the real shortage rather than players who trade out of habit. This guide covers what the building does, how rates work, and when a trade is actually worth the markup.

What You Can Trade

The exchange screen covers the full resource economy. Knowing which resource your faction actually needs stops you from wasting trades on the wrong rarity.

ResourceWhy It Matters
GoldThe flexible currency for recruitment, upgrades, and most buildings.
WoodBasic construction resource and common trade fuel.
OreBasic construction resource, interchangeable with wood in many trades.
GemstonesRare resource needed by several faction routes.
CrystalsRare resource that heavily gates Grove, Hive, and Dungeon timings.
MercuryRare resource used by Necropolis, Schism, and magic-focused paths.
Alchemical DustProgression resource for spell and unit upgrade paths.

How Exchange Rates Improve

Rates are not fixed. More Marketplaces across your towns, the Economy skill, and at least one faction law all move the same dial.

Trading as a Timing Tool

The best Marketplace trades are small and specific. You are not trying to stockpile a new resource; you are converting just enough to finish one dwelling, one upgrade, or one recruitment. That is why the building belongs in routes that already know their bottleneck rather than in every opening by default.

A useful memory anchor: with one Marketplace, one Crystal costs 8 Wood, 8 Ore, or 2,000 Gold. If your route needs Crystals, capturing basic mines early turns them into trade fuel. If your route needs Gems or Mercury, the same logic applies with the exact resource your faction is chasing.

FAQ

What resources can I trade at the Marketplace?

Gold, Wood, Ore, Gemstones, Crystals, Mercury, and Alchemical Dust. The Marketplace lets you convert one of these into another, which is how many week 1 routes solve a single missing rare resource.

Why are Marketplace prices so steep?

A single Marketplace applies a 300% markup. The exchange becomes more favorable as you own more Marketplaces, and the Economy skill counts as one extra Marketplace for rate purposes.

Does the Dungeon faction trade differently?

Yes. Dungeon has a faction law called "No markups" that removes the Marketplace markup entirely. This makes Dungeon one of the most comfortable factions for turning basic resources into Gems or Crystals.

What is a useful single-market exchange rate to remember?

With one Marketplace, one Crystal trades for 8 Wood, 8 Ore, or 2,000 Gold. That number explains why Grove and Hive openings so often pair a Marketplace with early Sawmill and Ore Mine control.

When is it a mistake to build the Marketplace?

When nothing is actually blocked. Building it out of habit delays a dwelling, economy upgrade, or Mage Guild. The correct time is the moment trading unlocks your next real timing.
